Ready To Read, Dr. Preston

As I walked into your class in August, I would've describe myself as a learner to be the old- fashion typical learner who would follow the school system's learning regulations. By having to write a five paragraph essay without making yourself be understood, using the context from a textbook that has been carried on through years, taking notes about irrelevant information, using a sheet of paper and pencil for every little aspect that is taking place during a lesson, and so on... We as students are taught to obey these regulations when it comes to a learning environment. It's all about following directions, doing the work, and getting an A. However, as we were talking about The Making Of An Essay, I later on realized that it's not all about getting an A in the class and passing but to be fully understood and go more in depth with the topic. From this it will help me by spewing all my meaningful connections and thoughts. Having a mind set that only myself as an individual and learner be heard in an unique way whether for it being old- fashion.
By far, this course has changed my way of learning from not only making myself be understood when learning a new aspect of a subject but to also escape from the use of paper, pencil, and textbook. I fee that if it wasn't for the vote of either doing the open source learning or the typical method of working with the textbook. My learning wouldn't have genuinely progressed to be more efficient and useful. Yes, back then I would need guidance from my teachers to do a specific assignment or task but now I would define myself as a do it yourself learner that requires not as much guidance than before. Within the beginning of the four months my biggest struggle was how to mange your time on doing each assignment since that in this class it's all about time management. Later on I've learned how to understand the amount of time you're planning to spend on a specific thing can really improve your decisions and learning. This shows how we are dedicated as individuals by taking our time to be more mindful on the things that we need to work on. Because of this, I will give maximum effort so that my expectation is to be perfection and mindfulness.
If I had to pick one of the things that we have read throughout these four months would have to be The Richard Cory poem. This poem has stayed with me since day one. The reason why it grasp my attention was the story itself. "Richard Cory" is the story of a man who seems to have it all. The people of the town are clearly of lower financial class. They look up to him and want to be just like him. In the end, though, they learn a valuable life lesson. Richard Cory kills himself, showing the people of the town that some things can't be purchased and looks can be deceiving. The whole purpose of writing "Richard Cory" is to show that wealth and status don't ensure happiness. Also, what you see from the outside doesn't ensure you that everything is okay within the person. Yes, Richard Cory seemed happy and lived the perfect life but you can't judge or have the right to your opinion if it doesn't consult you in anyway. When it says, "And he was rich-- yes, richer than a king..." it writes that  he has it all. Everyone in the town wants to be him based on the outlook that he has everything. But, it appears to be that his life is lacking happiness. Due to this, he kills himself because he is unhappy Sometimes in these situations it may look that they are happy but again you can't think or say something that you don't really know. When we had a discussion on You're Not Entitled To Your Opinion, we said that "It means that no one has the right to stop people's thinking/ saying whatever they want." We can't stop from what they are going to say but give out valid facts on why they shouldn't or correct wording to use. Having an open mind and an one on one conversation you can learn a couple of things on what not to say just like with Richard Cory's situation. With his suicide, Richard Cory shows that having even the greatest financial wealth and status does not mean that a person has everything needed for a fulfilling life.
When I was writing my favorite blog post and journal entry my mentality state was to change my self- talk. The conversations I had with myself were a direct reflection on my mindset. I tried to avoid telling myself  "I am not good enough to achieve my dream," because if you do then your thoughts will create your reality and your mindset will hold you back from having the life you want. To upgrade your mindset, change your negative self- talk to an empowerment speech, which I did. By saying, "I can do this" or "I got this," genuinely helps not only have a positive mentality but encourage you to do good on your work. I also changed my language of writing. Changing your inner thought dialogue and the story you're telling, changes the way how you want others to read your comprehension and understanding. With this it will promote a mindset of abundance instead of having a lack of laziness.
Overall, I found that working in a learning environment that has different regulations from any typical English class has taught me to be more okay on not following the learning system’s obligations that is from using a textbook, a sheet of paper, and pencil. The scope of having open-source learning has truly help me gain new methods that I could never come to understand in any normal English course. The varied material offered is rich and expansive, is taught in a manner that develops a greater knowledge about technology. But to also present the works in a way that is enjoyable as well. Not only did the course made a big difference in my learning but more thoughtful to the works of the English Language and educational.

My Brain On Thanksgiving Break

My ways for sustaining my memory before leaving to Thanksgiving Break was by having plenty of rest, reviewing my notes once in a week throughout the week, and practice mindfulness. A person's mental and emotional needs may not be as obvious. Good mental health allows people to think clearly, develop socially and learn new skills. Additionally, good peers and encouraging words from others are all important for helping people develop self confidence, high self-esteem, and a healthy emotional outlook on life.

The Ethical Challenges Self Driving Cars Will Face Everyday

  • Eye contact- anyone who has ever spent time in a major city knows that close between drivers and pedestrians are simply part of life
  • Judgement calls- sometimes drivers have to make instant decisions when they are faced with obstacles on the road
  • Legal Responsibility- a car that technically functions perfectly according to road laws and mechanical performance could still perform an operation that causes negative results

Same Words Different People

The two words that were discussed today were tone and individualism. At first I thought individualism was being alone without the help of anyone, but after our class discussion I understood that it means to be independent and start to become more into an adult.

Ancient Rhetoric In Modern Times

In my opinion, I think ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos make up the arguments in the article more effective and efficient because they explain the main idea so that the audience can grasp the message and comprehend it as well.

Anatomy Of A Persuasive Argument

A persuasive argument is the one making readers agree with your opinion. You can't just make a claim; you should offer a series of statements with evidence to support it. Only the claims with evidence are worth using in your argumentative essay.

Rhetorical Strategies Part II

  • Ethos:
    • The author, Johannes is a philosopher who works with engineers in "Stanford's Center for Automotive Research (Self- Driving Cars Article)."
    • Diana Divecha- credible because she has   a Ph. D psychology and she's an assignment clinical professor at Yale child Study Center and Yale Center for emotional. Intelligence which makes her credible to talk about bullying.
  • Pathos:
    • Diana Divecha- "school with a positive climate faster healthy development, while negative school climate is associated with higher rates of student bullying, aggression, victimization, and feeling unsafe."
    • Diana Divecha- "A majority of teachers repost that they feel unprepared to deal with classroom bullying."
    • Diana Divecha- "Do leaders understand that uninterrupted severe bullying can confer life long native consequences of targets of bullies, bullies, and witness."
  • Logos:
    • A Study of 36- first graders showed that when teachers were made emotionally supportive of students children were less aggressive and had greater behavioral self-control, compared to the use of behavioral management, which did not improve student self- control.
  • Kairos:
    • "So a school's specific issues can be addressed, and the flavor of local cultures retained. Schools climate assessments can be completed periodically to track the impact of improvements."
All of these terms can be used in an argument against parents to get what you want by providing them with facts and evidence. In fact, as soon as your parents realize that you're right they won't be able to disagree with you. If only you have reasonable facts/ evidence.

On Self Reliance Part 2

  • Emerson talks about how teens are non-caring
    • Good and mistaken
  • Teens don't care about what you want them to care about
  • Oracles tell the truth
  • Adults have to comprise to babies when they're in the same room
  • When Emerson says all people are rude is because they're actually being themselves without caring what other people think
  • Society= conspiracy

First Impression of "On Self- Reliance"

  • Our acts our angels are, good or ill."
  • It's the belief in you that's worth on celebrating
    • It's the belief that is also genius
  • Toil- means work
  • The only champion and captain is you
  • Eminent- a respected person; the master
  • Admonition- a warming; lecture
  • Something about us and about life that goes deeper in thought
I do believe that who you want to become is based on your personal and mental self. No other person is going to work and reach the goals that you want to accomplish other than you. We have to be true to ourselves and not phrase others.

Let Me Walk You Through The Pedestrian (Pre- Essay)

Ray Bradbury a little short story called The Pedestrian. In this story, Ray Bradbury uses a guy by the name of Leonard Mead, for the main character. During the day is when you will only find the citizens roaming the city, while nights are dedicated to the families watching  television. Leonard Mead is not like other people though. At night. he usually takes walks up and down the streets, just to relax and cool off. One night he finds a police car, that is of course computer generated. It happens to be the only police on duty, in this big city. This is because there will be no crime when people are stuck at home watching television. So the two talk for a while, then later the car takes Mr. Mead to the Psychiatric Research Center, because the car has no idea why he is not at home watching television. It goes downhill from there for Mr. Mead.
The title of this story is The Pedestrian. Right then I thought the story would be something about a walker or someone who likes to explore. I was right, it was about Mr. Leonard Mead, a writer, who is not like the other citizens, He is a "pedestrian" who routinely walks at night, while the other's are inside watching television. My thoughts on the title is unique because  it really encompasses the whole story and it's purpose for people to get out of the house, and not depend on technology so much."...Arizona desert with no house in a thousand miles, and only dry river bed, the streets, for company." This refers that there is absolutely no life out there on the streets, and everyone is inside watching television. Everything is "dry" and there is no life.
In this story, there are some images that I took away from it. When Leonard steps into the cop car, I feel like he tastes defeat, and knows he has lost. "The car moved down the empty river bed streets with the empty side walks, and no sound and no motion all the rest of the chill November right." This quote right here just says that there is nothing left, and everything is done. Nothing came out of Mr. Mead, and I feel like he just gives in and tastes defeat.
The author, Ray Bradbury, uses Figurative Language in The Pedestrian to make the story more interesting and exciting. "The tombs, ill-lit by television light, where the people sat like the dead, the grey or multicolored lights touching their faces, but never really touching them." This has to be one of the lines that stood out to me because it is interesting and creepy also. He refers to the house as tombs, and the dead sit there and just stare at the television. It pictured a zombie, with it's normal look, just spaced out and focused on one thing. He also uses similes and metaphors to get the reader more into the story, and also make the story seem like it pops out to the reader. He uses figurative language perfectly.
Ray Bradbury had a very demanding and frustrated tone. He is frustrated that everyone is inside watching television at night, and that there is only this one man that will  get outside and do something. He wants people to be less dependent on electronics, and do more things with the outdoors and family. I think if he came to our society today, he would be very disappointed with us and technology, and losing touch with each other and the outdoors. Humanity should not forget nature and should be wary of technology.

The Art Of Hosting Good Conversations Online

  • Be kind
  • Start a conversation with everyone
  • Always set a good example for others to follow
  • Stay out of conflict
  • Don't take sides with anybody else
  • Address a problem in private and not for everyone to know about
  • Learn from your mistakes

So This Guy Goes For A Walk

On this particular evening, a police car stops him and orders him to put his hands up. He answers are unsatisfactory to the police. This car is the only remaining police car in the area. After the election last year, the force was reduced from three cars to one because crime was seen as unnecessary.
When Mr. Mead answers the question of employment by saying he is a writer, the police interpret his answer as "unemployed." They order him to enter the car despite his protests, and as he approaches he realizes there is no driver at all.

The Value Of Time

The time investments that I make today to help with my future are to listen to music in my room. I found this peaceful because it's a time where I can shut the world off and have a time to meditate and relax. One of my future goals that I want to accomplish in life is to learn how to manage my time better, which means to be capable on dealing with last minute time consuming problems while being under pressure.

Same Words Different People

Based on Today's conversations, I learned that words can have a simpler definition from what they originally come from. In fact, my group members had different meanings with certain types of words than to what I had already thought of at the first place. It mainly happens when one typical word has more than one different meaning.

Ex:

  • Meme- a humorous video/ picture
  • Virus- infected/ sick

Investing Me

I've started to think about how I'm planning to fund-raise after high school and I thought of applying for a part time job so I can start earning money for myself. Hopefully, I get approved for scholarships that will help me get through my years in college; however, before I graduate I'd like to have job experience so it can help me out once I do get a part time job after I move on to adulthood.

Letter To A Mentor (Draft 1)

Dear Mentor,
My name is Yenifer Castro; who is sixteen years old. My interests continue to change as I grow. However, I have noticed that I'm very intrigued on Criminology studies. Being exposed to shows and articles that go more in depth on criminals/ serial killer's minds had me be more interested on the case, the criminal/ serial killer's background, psychological state within the person who committed the action, etc. I used to dislike crime shows that my parents would put on the television, but as I grew older I began to lean towards crime movies/videos.
